Joseph Reginald Mitchell est né le 27 juillet 1908, près de Iona, dans le comté de Robeson en Caroline du nord, dans une explotation de coton.
En 1925, il étudie à l’University of North Carolina pendant quatre ans.
En 1929, un texte retint l’attention d’un éditeur et part à New-York, où il arrive le lendemain du crash, le 25 octobre.
Pendant neuf ans, il ecrivit dans le Morning World, the Herald Tribune, and the World-Telegram .
En 1938, il entre au New Yorker.
En 1931, Joseph Mitchell se marie avec la photographe Therese Dagny Engelstead Jacobsen. Le couple aura deux filles, Nora et Elizabeth.
En 1938, son premier livre, My Ears Are Bent paraît.
Il reçoit, en 1965, un prix de l’American Academy of Arts and Letters, un an après la publication du Secret de Joe Gould.
Sa femme meurt en 1980.
Il reçoit le North Carolina Award for Literature en 1984.
En 1992, la plupart de ses papiers du New Yorker dans Up in the Old Hotel and Other Stories.
Il meurt le 24 mai 1996 d’un cancer.
