Centrally located within Yap State, Faraulep is a small and compact atoll of the western Caroline Islands. It is located 116 km southwest from Gaferut and 695 km east-southeast from Yap.
The atoll is approximately square-shaped, with sides of between 3 and 5 km in length with an overall area of 7 km². Its broad reefs enclose a small, but deep, central lagoon with a single opening on the southwest face. There are three similar-sized islands located upon the eastern side of the reef that have a combined land area of 0.4 km².
