Kosrae

Kosrae

The easternmost of the Caroline Islands, Kosrae is the sole constituent of Kosrae State. The island lies 260 km southeast from the Pohnpeian atoll of Pingelap.

With maximum dimensions of 15 km (east to west) and 13 km (north to south) Kosrae is approximately clover-leafed in shape with a surface area of 110 km². The island comprises a narrow, low-lying coastal strip of swamp and mangrove forest that rises via gentle slopes and valleys to a rugged, eroded, mountain interior reaching 629 m above sea level at Mount Finkol (Finol Finkol). The entire island is encircled by a fringing reef system.
