Pikelot

Pikelot

The low coral island of Pikelot (shown here in false-colour, with vegetation cover in red) is the easternmost possession of Yap State. The island lies 100 km directly east from West Fayu and over 1,000 km east from Yap. The island is located upon a small seamount that lies immediately off the western end of the submarine tablemount that forms the large Condor Reef formation.

The densely vegetated Pikelot is oval in outline and surrounded by fringing reefs all sides. Reefs on the east, north and south are situated a few hundred metres offshore from the steeply sloping beaches and create a small lagoon environment; fringing reefs on the western side lie closer to shore and are less well developed. To the northwest, east and south extends a shallow platform of up to 2.5 km in width, creating an extensive shallow water ecosystem
