An atoll of the Mortlock Islands group of southeastern Chuuk State, Lukunor lies 264 km southeast from Chuuk; its nearest neighbours include the large atoll of Satawan, 8 km to the southwest and the smaller Etal, 14 km to the northwest.
The atoll has maximum dimensions of 13.5 km from east to west and 8 km from north to south and consists of a near continuous outer rim of 39 km in length that encloses an interior lagoon of 55 km² in area. The northern rim is broad and generally submerged or awash; its eastern section contains two small islets. The southern rim of the atoll is narrow and contains 16 islets, including the atoll's major landmasses located at the eastern and western ends. The 18 islets of Lukunor have a total area of 2.8 km²; Likinioch, the largest island, has an area of 1.28 km².
