Gaferut

Gaferut

Gaferut is a low coral islet of northeastern Yap State located 116 km northeast from Faraulep and almost 700 km northwest from Chuuk.

The island — less than 0.1 km² in area — is located towards the southeastern side of a small platform-like reef of 1.5 km by 1 km in size. Fringing reefs, arranged in a crescent on the eastern side, protect the shallow lagoon that surrounds the island. Constructed from compacted coral limestone, coral rubble, coarse and fine sands the island is vegetated with an open forest of Tournefortia argentea and Cocos nucifera.
