Atlasova

Atlasova, northern Kuril Islands

The small island of Atlasova (Остров Атласова) is a member of the Northern Kuril Islands, being located 22 km off the northwest coast of its larger neighbour of Paramushir. The island, sometimes referred to as Alaid (after its volcano of the same name), has an area of 153 km².

The island, which sits westwards from the main northeast to southwest trending line of the Kuril Islands, is the tallest and northernmost volcano to be found in the Kuril Islands. The centrally located, symmetrical cone of Vulkan Alaid reaches a height of 2,339 m. The explosive activity of 1790 and 1981 were amongst the largest recorded volcanic eruptions to be experienced in the Kuril Islands.
