kharimkotan

kharimkotan

kharimkotan (Остров Харимкотан) is located in the Northern Group of islands, lying 13 km off the southeastern tip of Onekotan from which it is separated by the Krenitsyn Strait.

Measuring 8 by 12 km, with an area of 68 km², Kharimkotan is formed by the 1,157 m tall volcano of the same name. The volcano's peak is breached by two large horseshoe-shaped craters formed by collapse of the volcano's upper slopes. The lobate peninsulas of the east and northwest coasts were formed by the debris-slides of these collapses. In 1993 the volcanic cone of Severgin also collapsed. The resulting debris-avalanche, which flowed in to the sea creating a tsunami, is still clearly visible in this image.
