Situated in the Central Kuril islands between Ketoy (25 km to the southwest) and Rasshua (16 km to the northeast) lie a number of small islands and emergent rocks. The largest — Yankicha (Остров Янкича) and Ryponkicha (Остров Рыпонкча) — are collectively known as Ushishir (Ушишир). Ushishir is the remains of a partially submerged volcano: the northern slopes of the volcano form the island of Ryponkicha, while the former summit caldera forms the island Yankicha.
