Chirpoy & Brat Chirpoev

Chirpoy

Located in the Southern Kuril Islands between the islands of Simushir and Urup are the twin islands of Chirpoy (Остров Чирпои) and Brat Chirpoev (Остров Чирпоев). Commonly referred to as Chirpoy — after the larger of the islands.

Chirpoy, Brat Chirpoev and a number of smaller islets are collectively known as the Chernye Brat'ya Islands (Острова Чирпые Братья). Chirpoy (at right in the image) is the northernmost of the two main islands with an area of 21 km². Brat Chirpoev — lying across the Snou Strait from Chirpoy — is the smaller of the pair with an area of 16 km².

The historically active volcano of Vulkan Chernoga (Chernyy) on Chirpoy reaches a height of 691 m, being the tallest of several volcanic structures to be found on the island. Brat Chirpoev, with no recorded historical eruptions, contains the groups tallest peak — the 749 m tall Brat. Both islands and the numerous offshore rocks are all that remain of a large (8-9 km) partially submerged caldera.
