Habomai Islands

Habomai Islands

The Lesser Kuril Ridge, emerging from and including the Nemuro Peninsula of Hokkaido, extends for around 100 km in length, and is located to the southeast of the southern Kuril island of Kunashir from which it is separated from by the 60 km wide Yuzhnokuril'skiy Strait. The emergent parts of this ridge constitute the Habomai Islands, consisting of six small, low and treeless islands and the larger, forested and hilly island of Shikotan.

Like the southern Kuril Islands, the Habomai group of islands are the subject of a long-running territorial dispute between Japan and the Russian Federation (from where they are currently administered).
