Manuhangi

Manuhangi, Tuamotu Archipelago

Manuhangi (shown here in false-colour) is a small atoll of the Centre East group, located 68 km southeast from Nengonengo and 50 km west from Paraoa.

The atoll is oval-shaped in appearance with dimensions of 5.4 km in length and 3.6 km in width. The outer reef rim is continuous with no passages connecting the open sea with the shallow interior lagoon. The rim is almost entirely topped by one single elongate island that wraps around the lagoon; a number of small breaks, which form spillways across the reef, are found at the southern end of the atoll. The eastern side is more vegetated than that of the western rim which consists of sparsely vegetated, compacted coral sands.
