Pinaki, located in the Centre East Group 15 km southeast from Nukutvake, is one of the smallest of the Tuamotu atolls, with a lagoon covering just 0.74 km². The atoll has been geologically uplifted slightly so that a broad reef flat surrounds much of the island. The same process has resulted in the lagoon being cut-off from the open sea, except for a single tidal spillway on the western side.
