Ravahere

Ravahere, Tuamotu Archipelago

Ravahere is a small, boomerang-shaped atoll of slightly over 7 km² in area, located within the Centre East group of atolls. The atoll is situated near the centre of the archipelago, lying 2 km south across a narrow channel from its larger neighbour of Marokau (visible at top-left of this image).

The shallow lagoon of 5.1 km² in area is divided in to two sections, with the smaller and shallower basin being found in the south — it is separated from the main body of lagoon by lagoon-crossing ridge. The lagoon of Ravahere is isolated from the surrounding waters of the Pacific, with no passages to the open sea. The atoll measures 16 km in length and 4 km in width.

Ravahere is the emergent part of a twin-peaked seamount — the much larger atoll of Marokau occupies the northwestern summit.
