Temoe

Temoe, Tuamotu Archipelago

The most southeasterly of all the Tuamotu atolls, Temoe is an outlying member of the Îles Gambier grouping. The atoll lies 37 km southeast from the outer barrier reefs of the Îles Gambier proper and over 1,700 km southeast from Mataiva at the extreme northwest of the archipelago.

With a land area of 6.9 km², Temoe measures roughly 8 km by 4 km consisting of a rectangular-shaped formation bound by open reefs on the east and elongated motu on the west. There is no reef-crossing passage connecting the lagoon with the surrounding ocean; instead water exchange takes place via numerous spillways on the eastern side.

Located 25 km southeast from Temoe lies the submerged reef known as the Banc du Portland. The bank is located in water of around 10 m in depth.
