Akutan

Akutan, Aleutian Islands

Located 20 km northeast from Unalaska, across the Akutan Pass, and 2 km southwest from Akun, Akutan is the fourth largest member of the Fox Islands group (the island is also the largest member of the Krenitzin Islands subgroup). Akutan measures 31 km in length and is up to 24 km in width.

The western part of Akutan is formed by — and dominated by — the 1,296 m volcanically active peak of Akutan Volcano. At the summit of this flat-topped mountain sits a circular caldera measuring 2 km across and reaching a depth of 365 m. Within the caldera, a cindercone — the site of frequent historical eruptions — rises to a height of 200 m above the caldera floor. Also within the caldera is a crescent-shaped lake located near the southwest rim. Both these features are visible in the above image, as is the large gap in the north wall of the caldera.
