Yunaska

Yunaska, Aleutian Islands

The island of Yunaska is a member of the Islands of Four Mountains group, located between Herbert Island (to the northeast) and the small island of Chagulak (to the southwest). The island measures around 23 km in length, covering an area of 478 km².

Yunaska is constructed from two volcanic peaks that are connected to one another by a moderately flat valley. The western volcano, reaching a height of 950 m above sea level, has not been active in historical times. The eastern volcano is topped by one of the most impressive calderas to be found among the Aleutian Islands. Within the caldera (see additional image) is a smaller peak that rises 500 m above the caldera floor — it too, is topped by a small crater.
