Kasatochi

Kasatochi

A small island of the Andreanof Islands group, the 5 km² island of Kasatochi is located 18 km northwest from Cape Kigun — the western tip of Atka — and 24 km southwest from the island of Koniuji.

The island of Kasatochi is the emergent summmit of an active stratovolcano, comprising a small cone with a deep lake-filled caldera of around 700 m in diameter. The ridge-like rim of the caldera's southern edge reaches a height of approximately 300 m above sea level — the island's highest elevation.

After perhaps a century of quiescence the Kasatochi volcano experienced an explosive eruption in August 2008, with heavy ash falls blanketing the island, modifying its profile and destroying the flora and fauna of the island.
