Chuginadak

Chuginadak, Aleutian Islands

Chuginadak, located 40 km west from Umnak, is the largest member of the Islands of Four Mountains Group at 167 km² in area. Its immediate neighbours include Carlisle Island, 2 km off the northwest coast (at top-left, across the 3 km-wide Carlisle Pass, in the above image), Herbert Island, 5 km to the southwest, and Kagamil, 6 km to the northeast.

The 23 km long island is dominated by the conical-shaped bulk of the 1,730 m high Mt. Cleveland (the tallest peak of the Four Mountains Group). Mt Cleveland is an active stratovolcano — one of the most active in the Aleutian chain. It is joined to the lower, eastern half of this twin-lobed island by a low-lying plain. (The eastern half of the island is at top-right in this image.)
