Aris lies in the southwestern regions of the Bismarck Sea, 19 km off the Hansa Bay region of northern New Guinea; the large volcanic island of Manam is located 5.5 km to the southwest.
Aris is approximately circular in outline with a distinctive horn-shaped point on the southwestern side that is formed by low lava dome. The island has dimensions of 1.4 km by 1.7 km and consists of a low dome-shaped volcano with a summit crater that is open to the north. The interior reaches a maximum elevation of 240 m.
