Goodenough Island

Goodenough Island, Papua New Guinea

The smallest and northernmost of the main islands that comprise the D'Entrecasteaux Islands, Goodenough Island is situated 4 km north of its larger neighbour of Fergusson Island (visible at the right edge of the image), across the Moresby Strait. The New Guinea mainland lies 30 km to the southwest across the waters of the Ward Hunt Strait.

The island is roughly circular in shape, measuring 39 km by 26 km with an area of 687 km². From a coastal belt of 2 to 10 km in width, the island rises sharply to a height of 2,536 m — one of the world's highest mountains to be found on an island of this size.
