Gallows Reef

Gallows Reef, Papua New Guinea

The small Gallows Reef formation is located at the southeastern end of the Goschen Strait — the 12-18 km wide stretch of water that separates Normanby Island from the New Guinea mainland and from the numerous reefs and islands the line the entrance into Milne Bay. The reef is located 8 km from Cape Ventenat, the southeastern tip of Normanby Island.

Gallows Reef consists of two nested, arcuate reef formations that create a horseshoe-shaped structure that is open on the western side. The entire structure extends over a distance of 10 km from east to west and 6 km from north to south. Two small sand cays — Jack Island and ketch Island are located on the northern section of the easternmost reef.
