Dumoulin Islands

Dumoulin Islands, Papua New Guinea

The small islands that comprise the Dumoulin Islands group are located in the western reaches of the Louisiade Archipelago; situated 27 km south from Sideia.

The four small, high islands (rising to around 110 m above sea level) emerge from a common submarine shelf of some 6 km in length. Each island is only a few hundred metres across, hilly, with steep slopes and cliffs, and are thickly wooded. In addition to the four larger islands there are also two small islets. Baiiri, the largest island of the group, is located at the western end of the group; the second largest island is that of Ana Karu Karua at the eastern end.

To the north of the Dumoulin Islands is an extensive area of shallow shoals and reef environments known as the Siriki Shoals (partially visible at top-right in the above image); to the south is a long, submerged barrier reef formation.
