Jomard Islands

Jomard Islands, Papua New Guinea

The two islets (shown here in false colour) that comprise the Jomard Islands group are located at the southern side of the deep Jomard Entrance — the 9 km wide passage between Bramble Haven and the western edge of the Vanatinai barrier reef. The islands thus form part of the Louisiade Archipelago.

The largest of the islands, known as Pana Waipona, is located upon a small reef at the centre of the Jomard Entrance; the smaller island of Pana Rai Rai, located 3.5 km to the east, occupies a larger reef on the eastern edge of the Jomard Entrance. Both islands are low-lying, wooded and sit towards the northern end of shallow, reef-fringed lagoons.
