Bam

Bam, Papua New Guinea

The southeasternmost of the Schouten Islands, Bam is located 37 km northeast from the mouth of the Sepik River at Cape Girgir. The island of kadovar lies 18 km to the west and Blup Blup 23 km to the northwest. The island of Vokeo, at the opposite end of the Schouten Islands group, lies 92 km to the northwest.

Bam is a small, roughly circular shaped island with a diameter of 3 km. The island is the conical summit of one of western Papua New Guinea's most active volcanoes, reaching an elevation of 685 m above sea level. Its steep-walled summit caldera (300 m wide, 180 m deep) has been the site of many small explosive eruptions during the last 100 years — most recently in 1960. These latter eruptions have removed much of the vegetation cover from Bam's upper slopes.
