Laseinie Islands

Laseinie Islands, Papua New Guinea

The Laseinie Islands (shown here in false colour) are located amidst the numerous reefs and banks that lie off the Papuan Peninsula and southeast from the D'entrecasteaux Islands. The Laseinie Islands are situated upon a shallow carbonate bank formation that extends for around 16 km in an east-west direction and for up to 7 km north to south.

The northern edge of the bank is marked by a series of breaking reefs upon which are located several groups of small islands. In the west are the two islands that comprise the Hardman Islands (Hardman Islets). The northern and northeastern side of the bank contains the Laseinie Islands. The group consists of the three tiny islets of the kagawan Islands group (situated on the reefs of the northern edge of the bank), the large Dawson Island and two ismaller islands to its southeast.
