Bramble Haven

Bramble Haven, Papua New Guinea

A reef system of the Louisiade Archipelago, Bramble Haven is the easternmost section of an extensive chain of atolls, reefs and islands that extend from the western side of Vanatinai's southern barrier reef; the reefs ultimately continue to the west for over 400 km, wrapping around the southern coast of the Papuan Peninsula.

The Bramble Haven reef sits 5 km east from Long Reef and 9 km east, across the Jomard Entrance, from the outer reefs of the Vanatinai island-barrier reef complex. Between Bramble Haven and Vanatinai are the small islands that comprise the Jomard Islands (see large size image).

Bramble Haven is a small (17 km by 11 km ) atoll-like formation. Structurally there are five main reefs arranged around a rectangular-shaped central lagoon. The reefs are generally broad and largely submerged or awash. The reefs that form the northern edge of Bramble Haven contain five small islets, sometimes known as the Duperre Islets: Punawan, Duperre Islet, Siva, Panapwa and Awanagamwana.
